"Better Off Dreaming"

This came to me yesterday, and I dedicate it to all the single moms out there who have it hard but work for a better future, wondering and worrying how everything will turn out.

“Better Off Dreaming” by Wayne Johnson
(Dedicated to all single mothers working hard for their children’s future)

This life’s not all she bargained for
Can’t help wanting more than this
As she heads off to a nowhere job
She gives two young kids a kiss

Daylight pierces her broken heart
Refracting as it enters her jaded soul
With every pore crying out
For something more, something whole

She can’t help but feel guilty
For mistakes that haunt her life
What happened to Mr. Forever?
Thought by now she’d be his wife

Trying to forget, she fakes a smile
Handing customers their change
Guess life doesn’t go like you plan it
You know sometimes life is strange

It’s not as if she wants it all
She just needs some sweet relief
And someone to come home to
Who sweeps her off her feet

She hates wanting what she doesn’t have
Just feels stupid when she dreams
She’d cry if any tears were left
Can’t stand it so she screams

God help me, I need it
Am I asking for too much?
Just want a good life for my babies
And a little tender touch
I need something more than
Missing precious days
I just want a little time
To wish the pain away
So if you actually hear me
And if you’re really real
Just do this one thing for me
Can’t stand this hurt I feel

Standing on the edge of her future
She wonders if things will change
As she comes home to a babysitter
Who tells her something strange

Kids called the sitter mommy
When she tucked them in
It hurts so much to hear it
Don’t they know where mommy’s been?

Another day of work is over
A heartbroken mom lies down to sleep
Why think about what’s missing?
Better off dreaming than to weep
